MGB Oil Filters

MGBs use the same Fram PH43 oil filter as Mopar used for decades of V8s and Slant Sixes, but if your B has the upside-down filter orientation, the standard PH43 has no backflow valve to prevent all the oil from draining out of it.

I've never been real clear on what's right-side-up and what's upside-down for oil filters. My B — 1970 — has the kind with, uh, the o-ring side down. I use fram PH-8a (or equivalent) — the Ford 302/5.0 filter. These should have an anti-drainback valve, though some don't.

Good point. “Upside down” is O-ring down, which can allow the oil to drain out when the car is off if there's no backflow valve.

The inverted (O-ring down) MGB oil filter is also the same as the most common Volvo oil filter (as fitted to 4-cyl cars in the '80s and '90s). The factory Volvo part number is 3517857. If you can't find MGB in the parts book at the store (or don't trust the listing), look up the Volvo application or cross-reference 3517857 to your favorite brand. When you find the number, take the filter out of the box and make sure you can see a rubber flap through the holes — that's the anti-drainback valve.

Many MGB drivers have noticed a drop in oil pressure when using Fram filters. Wix or Napa Gold (made by Wix) is a better choice.

I have found that the K&N Gold HP1002 works really well for this application, with a good backflow preventer valve.
