Project 2002: Engine Assembly
Jan 18, 2012 update to the BMW 2002tii project car
With the new piston rings in hand from Ireland Engineering, we quickly got to work reassembling our BMW 2002’s engine. The rings were installed on the first-oversize pistons by hand; then, with a ring compressor, we tapped the pistons back home into the block.
From there, the process went quite smoothly: We used Ottoco MLS multi-layer head gasket, which doesn’t require retorqueing. It’s great that we can use modern technology in our 40-year-old engine. With the head on, we set the valve clearances at .008-inch with a feeler gauge and took care of the rest of the assembly, including the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.
Next up—installation!
