Weekend Getaway

Feb 23, 2009 update to the Innocenti Mini Cooper project car

The Mini got some exercise this weekend as we joined the All British Car Club of Volusia County for a Saturday afternoon drive to Skydive DeLand—figure the entire trip was about an hour long.

The cooling problems appear to be solved as the car behaved just fine. Upon getting home, we then made a quick run up to the local Harley dealership for one of their monthly cruise-ins.

Before leaving, we (finally) replaced our shift boot. The shift boot isn’t just a cosmetic piece, as it’s also a seal—it keeps the hot, nasty engine air from passing into the cockpit.

If you have the same rubber shift boot as mine (I replaced mine awhile ago with a genuine Rover item), it will probably keep drying out and covering itself with what looks like white dandruff flakes, which fall off all over the carpeting around it. Don't know exactly what it is, I guess just something in the make-up of the rubber they used. I've found that by periodically “moisturizing” it liberally with Meguiar's Endurance, it seems to hold it off pretty well.

Thanks for the tip. Our original boot was flat-out missing. We had just the bottom ring, and it was topped with a loose-fitting fake leather boot. As a result, hot air came right into our faces.
