Quick Clean

Aug 26, 2011 update to the Shelby GT 350 project car

As parts flew off the Shelby—remember, speed is of the essence as we have a big date in Montana coming up—we quickly cleaned and cataloged them. Our intern, Matt, manned the parts washer and bead blaster, while Orlando Mustang’s Peter Geisler repainted items like the transmission mount and original Shelby exhaust hangers—yes, even our hangers are original.

In addition to the engine, we also pulled the rest of the driveline. The differential and transmission both need to be rebuilt, but to keep the car mobile we fitted a replacement diff.

While tearing apart the rest of the chassis, we found very few problems. The car had a broken exhaust manifold stud, but our friends at Gary’s Driveline quickly fixed it.

After one day at Orlando Mustang, we had a nearly stripped chassis. Look at us, we’re making progress.

Looks like things are cookin' along. I'm so jealous - I love these cars! I inherited a '66 GT350 30 years ago but sold it - too many memories of my brother wrapped up in it. Of course I'm kicking myself now. I Enjoyed the Tiger build as well. Have fun!

Looking forward to the “restoration” Does anything sound better than a small block Ford? (except a 427 Cobra!)

I'd love to see a “patina resto” - hey, maybe I just coined a new term! Fix all the damage and neglect, but keep it looking old and weathered just the way it is. Like a nicely preserved antique, rather than a refinished one.

I'm still wondering how much is “affordable” for a Barn Find like that? Should I be dreaming of a Barn Find at $35K for a Shelby Mustang? Or would “affordable” be closer to $95K in that condition? Nonetheless - love the project so far! Carl B. Clearwater
