  This afternoon I have a job interview with my present employers biggest and most hated competitor. This company and my company are like the Montagues and thethe Capulets. I am aiming very high in my hourly rate negotiations, and feel that I have a very good shot at getting what I want. I am absolutely certain that they will give me a real offer, since they have been chasing me for years (as have other competitors) ; its just a matter dollars. In the past I've been of the opinion that its best to stick with the devil I know (the current employer ), but recently there has been a sea change of moral and management style (micro-management & fixing things that aren't broken ) following the retirement of the manager of my branch, so it might be a good time for a change of scenery. I hope the competitors will make a big offer, and that my company will match it, but if they don't, I am ready to roll!

  You obviously offer something they don't have, it's not unethical or like prostitution. Years ago you were questioned if you stayed with one company a long time, now you're questioned if you don't move around. What's wrong with you that makes you stay put, motivation, training, why does no one want you?

  In these times rarely does any company do anything to earn your loyalty, they certainly aren't loyal to their employees. You gotta go with what is best for you.

  I left a company I helped found when they decided they didn't need to treat me well anymore... Now I work for more money, fewer hours and in a less stressful environment. Best decision I ever made.

  In the past few years of my life I've made several significant changes that were far outside of my comfort zone, most have been beneficial, a few I wish that made sooner.

  I have a feeling that this will be one of them. I negotiated for more than opening offer (which itself was good) and got what I asked for in $$$ and will probably get what I want in vacation time too.

  I very seriously doubt that the current employer will match the offer.

  Congrats, keep lookin out for you and give them what they are paying for and you'll be fine.

  Andy, sounds just like what happened to me a few years back. Funny part is now four years later, I moved up 2 titles, then back down 2, but only had pay increases. My commute keeps getting shorter, work fewer hours, and I'd say my opinions have more sway now than at my highest title position.

  It's a wild ride, but been worth it.

  I caution against renegotiating with the current employer. My guess is that money is only one reason to leave and if they match or beat the new place's money that still leaves you not getting the other opportunities that the new place offers.
  

  Also, if you stay, will there be feelings hurt and is there the possibility that relationships have been damaged? Will they constantly be wondering if/when you are going to leave next? Will they trust you with info knowing that you have made friends with the enemy?

  Do it. Once the modern corporate method (micromanagement and solutions without problems) starts, things only get worse. I watched for five years as my previously agile & innovative company got on the "me too" train in our industry. Market share is shrinking, and they've been laying off people (full disclosure: including me, after 20yrs) left & right. Do it now, before you find yourself without an offer..or a job.

  How can it be a midlife crisis, when I've driven sportscars my entire life?

  This is why I don't believe in counter offering our employee's when they give us a notice. We have crossed the line of trust and can never go back.

  It is also why I never say a word to anybody if I am looking for a new job......
