I have 3 sewer/septic drain stacks that I need to cut off below ground and put new caps on so I can more easily mow.

Is there a simpler/easier way to do this than digging a honking huge & wide hole big enough for me to get a saw down there with plenty of sawing room?

Just bury them with more dirt.

It's pretty thick PVC so I might be there for days with a dremel.

    I forgot I've got a sawzall!!!!!

I'll still have to dig a pretty wide hole, but I'll bet the sawzall can handle it!

That's what I did to one of them initially, but unless you raise the dirt level for quite a ways around them the mower high centers just about where the cap is and then things get interesting. My wife just mowed that one over AGAIN so she's after me to fix it for real.

You need a hole - but it does not have to be huge.

You don't have to dig a hole at all for a sawzall.

Whack it off as best you can from one side, angled down, with the end of the blade in the dirt. Now do the same from the other side. Now the two opposite corners. Done.

Rubber cap it and band it.

You might want a trowel to dig a small trench to help with the screw on the band.

Build a raised-bed garden around the pipe area.

You have less to mow and a place to grow your own veggies or flowering plants.

Get a cutter made for a mill, one of the adjustable ones, get a real manly drill with a handle and cut it from the inside. It would work, but it will be hard. Easier than digging, though.

Link to a cutter made for just what you are doing.

I did that for one of them, but I've got 5 total.

I was gonna say stick a cutting wheel on something and stick it down there- that appears to be the intent with that tool.

I got my kid a go-kart and wasn't overly explicit about where he should and should not ride it. On one particular day, he cut between the house and the garden, and snapped the 4" PVC over the septic tank off below grade. I saw him run through the area, and saw the foot long piece of pipe tumbling after the kart. He never stopped and later claimed he never saw it and knew nothing of it. I spent a little time later that day restoring the pipe back to its original condition, then telling my son not to ride the kart between the house and the garden.

So, I'm going to recommend you use a kid on a go-kart. Not sure how you'd go about capping it. It will be a pretty rough "cut."

Well have a wife on a riding lawn mower with pretty much the same results.

    SAWZALL WON OUT!

Simple, easy, free and no digging required. You can cut dirt with a Sawzall too.

Is there nothing my sawzall won't cut?

I recessed them below ground and so that I can find them later and access them if I need to, I put sprinkler irrigation control covers over them. That way they are flat to the ground and easy to mow over.
