We got slammed on Long Island when I was in high school--no power for three days and just a mess.
We watched the storm from my friend's parents' back porch. My friend threw a beach ball into the air during the storm to see what would happen. We never saw that ball again.
Yes, we now have signatures.

Last big one for Central VA was Isabel back in '03. My first son was born that spring, and I remember heating water for his baby bottles on a Coleman stove on the back porch and storing it in a thermos for convenient use at all hours of the night. We were without power for days. I still remember the incessant howling of that wind. It went on for hours and hours.

You're in New Hampshire? By the time it gets that far north, it'll be nothing more than a sprinkle.
It's approaching Melbourne right now. The trees are whipping around and the radar map is showing rain approaching in the next hour or two. Fortunately for us, it will be well off shore as it passes. Good thing, too; it's supposed to climb to Cat 4 overnight tonight. I don't envy people on the Outer Banks of North Carolina; I assume they're leaving soon.

Candles, and a small battery operated radio are nice to have.
We have a kit stocked with everything we'll need for at least a week.

Dumbass. What you're supposed to do is:
NOTHING!
When the cameras show up, tell them how no one warned you, and now no one will help you out. Then call up Oprah and get yo' free house on!

Irene is supposed to hit Delaware as a Cat II hurricane around 8:00a on Sunday morning. By strange coincidence, that's almost exactly the same time I'm supposed to be moving my daughter into her dorm room... in Delaware.

I called one of my friends in Nassau yesterday. Charter boat captain, American. Mother answers. "Oh, we're just fine, he's finishing up tying up the boats now. We have a generator and some water, not worried at all." I'm going to call next week, if the phones are up yet, and ask her what she thought of her first hurricane. She will probably be waiting in line at the airport.

Lol I was supposed to fly out of Boston on Monday... not sure if that's gonna work. Good thing I changed flights to a hurricane(or rainstorm)-free day.

I'm west of Philly. Just picked up a 4000 watt generator of CL this afternoon. Filling both my gas cans, getting some water, already have batteries. Gonna grab one of those wind up flashlights too. I'm probably already too late to get stuff from the grocery store....

I've spent all day today, and will spend all day tomorrow, working on catastrophe plans for work. We have a lot of insureds along the eastern seaboard. Expecting a lot of flooded/damaged cars and trucks.

Good luck, everyone. I always feel so guilty when a storm I've been watching goes and whacks someone else, like I did a lousy job of watching it.
If the grocery stores and big-box stores are already cleaned out where you are, don't forget less-traveled options, like health food stores (they have pbj and bread, too), meat markets, produce stands, etc. for food and water, toy stores (batteries and flashlights), and so on.

Don't ever move inland (like I did), you'll get survivors' guilt. My vacation in 2003 was spent bringing up a hatch full of of bottled water & then chainsawing debris after Isabel. OBX is about 9-10hr. from Atlanta.
