That is pretty cool. I wonder if you could fill it with a water/alcohol mixture to keep it from freezing in the cold states. I think they add bleach so it doesn't get moldy on the inside.

    Definitely cheap to replace!

I'd try to see if it works with just cheap vodka first. My reasoning is that a friend of mine got caught stealing his dads vodka, kept in the freezer, because there were chunks of ice in it. He had been refilling it with water.

Anytime somebody tells you that vodka mixes well with anything, slide them a jar of mayonnaise and tell them to practice what they preach.

The bleach is to sterilize the water and deter algae

thats pretty awesome... wonder how long it took before they figured out the bit of bleach and the black film canister bit... having been in a few of these shacks I can def understand its merit... seems great for some of us GRMers lol

If those are regular soda bottles, imagine how bright a liter bottle would be. Edit: nevermind, I see they are liter bottles now.

    use a two litre bottle?

It's not a new idea. Tall ships used to use glass prisms mounted into the deck to provide light belowdecks

    That is truly amazing.

I remember hearing a while back that the california electricity shortage would cease if every household removed one bulb (that was on most of the time).

You could replace that bulb with a bottle.

Too bad we dont live in shacks, people dont want to go tearing into their roofs.
