I have just finished gutting out my 79 TR7 coupe and I want to set it up for autocross/track days/vintage racing. I want to start with safety equip. and I live in Rochester NY. Who do I need to talk to? What suppliers are are here on the east coast? Where do I get a cage, seat, harness? I don't know any people in the area that vintage race or autocross. I did hear that there is not much autocrossing going on in Rochester anymore. Please help to point me in right direction.

I strongly recommend that you contact a vintage race organization directly before investing in any equipment for your car.
Even more useful: attend a vintage race and see what folks are actually doing to their cars. Volunteering at an event would be super-valuable and you'd learn "the real deal" rather than guessing.
Here in the northeast USA, -VRG- is a great vintage club (they still three events left for '10 if you'd like to see an event). Their Watkins Glen event is Oct 15-17. One of the best things you could do would be to volunteer to work at an event like the VRG WG event. But don't just decide to show up. at the last minute.....many vintage events are non-spectator and you need to sign up ahead of time.

Well you can get a roll cage that fits best from Kirk Racing Products since the cages they make are acceptable for SCCA, NASA and other groups. The belts from really anywhere as long as they comply with what rating is required. The hardest thing is getting a seat that fits without banging you head on the roll cage. You may have to do some work to the floor to get the seat lower. I am in the process of building a rally TR8 and have built ITS TR8s in the past plus worked on TR7 & 8s since 1990. First TR7 was a russet brown 1978 coupe.....UGLY but it was mine!

I'll second that advice... Join a club, go to a few events and ask lots of questions. Most tracks will have a race shop where you can check out the various safety equipment, seats etc and the racers are always happy to share suggestions and experience. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and learn more.
Once you decide what class you will run in and know the sanctioning organization you will usually find that they will have their rules published on thier web site. Download and print the rule book and read it cover to cover and highlight what pertains to the vehicle class you will run in.
I think you have to register on the SCCA web site in order to get to the Rules.. http://www.scca.com/home.aspx
Have fun and good luck with the TR!

There's a large Vintage event at Watkins Glen the weekend after Labor day. it's a spectator event, draws a good crowd. Go into the paddock, included with admission, and talk to the drivers.
The SCCA will be at the Glen Sept. 17/18 for a non spectator event, the Fun One. If I don't break anything at Limerock on labor day, I'll be there with my Spitfire running in the historic class. Contact me off forum if you want to drop by, I should have a crew slot available or can get you on someone's list.
