Looking into a vintage racing Datsun 510.
What can the forum tell me about them?
Thanks.

Great car with a lot of support. Thanks to SCCA's GT and Production classes, there are a lot of parts and people that have the knowledge to make them work.
You'll also have some good competition against the Alfa GTV's and BMW 2002's.
I am considering a project car. Canadian based, but means hurting some of my Triumph friends feelings.
Don't think I'd sell my GT6 as you need in-between race weekend car. :)
Seems to have a lot of options and I love the shape.
Still last thing I need is another project, but I love the idea of a long term build up to vintage racing.
Now I have the impossible task of making a pitch to my wife :)

Andre, if you are looking to race a 510, I know where there is one in the GTA for sale. It has been a race car along time, canadian history if you go onto the CASC Forums and search the For Sale Forum you should find it. It was for sale about 6-8 months ago and as far as i know it is still available. Its a buyer market right now you can get some great deals on race prepared and sorted cars, so you spend less time wrenching and more time racing.

Ah, yes the gold one.
I spoke John back in 2008 about the car, from my email traffic I don't think we connected after the initial quires.
Would it run in +70 or historic?
Thanks.

Andre,
As far as SVRA goes the 1600cc version runs in Group 3 (Triumph Tr3-4, MGB, Porsche 356, etc).
The 1800 and 2L's run in Group 8, which would have you against BMW 2002's, Alfa GTV's, Porsche 914-6's, Datsun 240z's etc.
Andre,
John's 510 is a good car, has history and would run in G70 up here and as posted you would run either grp 3 or 8 depending on engine displacement
Last I heard he wanted around 4500 for it, a good price as I think he paid almost twice that when he bought it from Strudwick.
If you are open to different ideas there are alot of G70 cars available. What is your price range, where do you want to race and how fast do you want to go are the questions you need to answer when choosing a race car vintage/historic or modern
Cheers Steve
Andre,
If you want to stick with Triumph, go to www.race-cars.com and look at the 1974 Triumph Spitfire race car prep by Group44 according to the seller.
Photos show a well prepped race car, and its even your colour! Its a buyers market I'd bet you could get that for under $10,000 if it has history and group 44 at that it might be a wise investment that will put a big smile on your face. ![]()
I'm open to ideas... And not even hard set on Triumphs.
I like the vintage/historic class I think +70 would be a lot for a rookie.
And there is no rush. I had not planned to start racing for a few more years. I need time to raise all the required funds.
I want to ensure I can run my first season 4-5 races with full funding.
Trying to be smart and logical about all of this.
Just easy to get sucked into the excitement of a deal.

Andre, the 510 is a nice car, you can do a lot with it, but there's nothing like racing an open cockpit car. Maybe because my first race car was a formula car (F440)I'm biased but driving the spitfire at speed, getting blasted by the wind really adds to the feeling of speed.

I've always been a hardtop fan.
Hence my affair with the GT6.
I suppose its different with a helmet on and what not.
