  Wagon, since it was posted in other threads I'm not really letting the cat out of the bag.
  

  Aussie we will be learning these early M motors together unless you are ditching and going for the later 7M swap. I'm trying to stay stock on the Crown right now but who knows :)

  Trying to see how simple this swap is and whether there is any serious pitfalls, am hoping for a simple plug and play. The car is a wagon and here it is.

  

  Not wanting to do something too outrageous and a EFI 200hp engine with 5 speed should be just the ticket.

  

  Clean engine bay, and the interior is like new

  

  Clean title, runs and drives, but the engine has a knock and its auto. That must change.

  Look for bodywork, bumper tuck, clean paint, nice classic rims and lowered for a nice DD Cruiser.

  Engine is a 2563cc 4M with 3 speed auto. Car factory model designation is: X-10.

  Um...if you are ditching that 4M let me know...I might like to rebuild it to swap out the 2M in the Crown :)

  Depends upon how easy the existing motor is to repair and finding a manual trans for the old Yota, prefer 5 speed, will a Celica trans fit into this car?

  I honestly dont know but if its like the 2M you have to do a little hunting for the parts but most of them seem to be out there somewhere. Oddly enough the hardest thing to find so far has been a valve cover gasket (did find one on ebay eventually)

  I also have a copy of the 2M/4M factory engine manual, once the car comes up from my buddies house (he has the book too) I can scan bits if you have any questions.

  Congrats on the awesome car. Toyota transmissions, far as I know, tend to be pretty interchangeable. So I'm guessing a Celica W will fit. But I'm not a great resource.

  In light of your most recent email, i'd say your best EASY option would be a 7mge swap w/ 5 speed setup from Supra. Should be a relatively easy swap.

  Or you could take it one step further with the knowledge that anywhere a 7m fits, a 2jz will fit. Grab an N/A 2jz out of an SC300 or GS300 from any old junkyard for cheap, and use a 7m R154 trans from a MKiii Supra with that. Should yield around 250hp and make beautiful noises.

  If you want to go old school and weird, i also believe a 1G-GTE should also be a mostly bolt in affair, it was the precursor to the "JZ" engines and made up to 210hp in stock form. It will also make pretty noises. Downside is that you'll have to source this engine from an importer.

  I like that idea. Keep EFI and you have a great retro cruiser

  Either the 7M or the 2JZ would be EFI, and 5 speed is absolutely required.

  Is the 7M-GE around 200hp stock?

  Measurements The 7M-GE is a three-liter, 2954 cc, 24-valve engine. The valves are placed at a 50-degree angle for performance, and the cylinder bore is 83 mm (3.27 inches). The stroke is 91 mm (3.58 inches). The 7M-GE is also double overhaul camshaft (DOHC), fuel-injected.

  The 7M-GE is one of the fabled Japanese power engines of its time, achieving both quiet and smoothness.

  Power The 7M-GE outputs 190 to 204 horsepower (142 to 152 kW) at 6,000 rpm, and 185 to 196 feet per pound foot at 4,800 rpm.

  The 7M-GE was manufactured between 1986 and 1992 with 2954 cc and a compression ratio of 9.2:1, outputting 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. It was built between 1990 and 1991 with 2954 cc, and a compression ratio of 9.8:1 with 190 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. The 7M-GEU was built between 1986 and 1992 had 2,954 cc at 9:2:1 with 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The 7M-GTE was manufactured between 1987 and 1990 and featured 2,954 cc with a 8.4:1 compression ratio for 230 horsepower at 5,600 rpm.

  Miscellaneous Raise normally aspirated 7M-GE engines to a 12.5 compression, maximum, or the design could interfere with the combustion airflow. The turbo compression can be set as low as 8.0:1.

  The 7M-GE can handle high rpms, but a continuous boosting past 16 pounds per square inch (psi) could warp the heads, for which the 7M-GE is notorious.

  Yep!

  204hp IIRC for the later years. They wake up a bit with the usual tricks, too.
