Wifey's car is creeping up on the 10k mark, and I've decided I'm going to switch to synthetic oil.
Mobil 1 is easy to find. Any reason not to use it?

Here we go, another oil thread....How long before Amsoil pops up? I think Mobil 1 is fine, but I've gotten the better part of 200k out of cars on regular stuff. (cars were sold for other issues {rust, borebom}and ran fine at point of sale.) I change every 3500 miles with good filter.
Old enough to know better, too young too care!
You didn't have to wait long.
Amsoil all the way. I change mine around 9K miles. I could go more but that is all I put on in a year.
I have two vehicles,so that is the reason for the low miles.
Subjects that we rehash annually that should be taboo but are not:
Mobil1 from WalMart in convenient 5 quart package.
Hanes socks.
FOTL hybrid boxer briefs.
NGK premium spark plugs.
Red Wing Ultralites
Listerine
Lap Band
AC/DC
and As long as the wheels are driven.
Internationally known as The Brown Stig
Redline or Royal Purple is what I have used in my cars.
Silkolene is what I used in my R6.
Motor oil is motor oil

Actually I only use Castrol for break-in purposes and Mobil 1 for regular use because I don't wanna order oil for the streets.

I HATE that dipstick ad!!!! Makes me want to check his oil level with a flaming baseball bat. Arrgghh.
There is a "Motor oil is motor oil" thread in Classic Motorsports that touches on synthetic to a degree http://classicmotorsports.net/forum/classic-cars/motor-oil-is-motor-oil/15109/page1/
and bear in mind the filter as well (ever opened up a Fram ? no more Frams on any of mine)
Has anyone tried just filling the whole engine with graphite? It works really well on my skateboard wheels.

If ever an ad has the exact opposite effect, its that one.
I've had advertising people tell me the purpose of the ad is to get the name of the product in your mind, not to sell the product.
Because of that ad, I will NOT buy Castrol now.
Whatever is on sale and I'm an Amsoil Dealer.
Sounds like the dipstick ad is doing exactly what the marketing department at Castrol intended, make you talk about their product. Strange it makes you guys mad and it makes me laugh.
I miss my Dork status.

Funny that assault and battery can sell something.
It's on television it isn't real assault and battery. Nothing on television is real, it's entertainment.

Cougar Town is loosley based on Fresno. Must be I was just there for a couple days.
And oil is oil, just to keep in line with the thread.

don't worry about staying on topic - this a "Which oil?" thread. It is identical to the "ignore" thread on this board.

I have a friend that takes the oil out of his diesel Excursion and uses it in his diesel Isuzu. The Isuzu has over 400k on it. Is synthetic really necessary? I have my doubts and never have been able to justify the cost.

I think the first place they should have had the Castrol guy was BMW HQ, where some moron let cars out the door WITHOUT dipsticks...
IIRC, GRM did a list of tips for stock class tweaks, and high quality synthetics (in engine, diff, coolant, etc.) netted something like 1-2 whp on a BMW E30 318i.
Sorry to start a e36M3storm, and how the berkeley did we get to Cougar Town?
FWIW - I'm switching to synthetic because it is a new car that gets very little action - like under 5k per year. I thought synthetic might be better for a car that might get an oil change annually - not based on mileage.
(yeah, I'm lazy)
I've used Castrol GTX for everything since 1977 but Mobil 1 was $21 bucks for a 5 qt jug at Wallyworld, so the cost wasn't really an obstacle.
Please carry on without me....
I like Wal-Mart's synthetic and oil filters.
Navigator? I hardly knew her!
If oil is changed regularly, it doesn't matter much. If oil is hardly ever changed and you abusify your car, then it matters. I use Valvoline Dura Blend because the only quick-change oil place near me is a Valvoline. I had Mobile One in the MR2 when it all drained out and I spun a bearing, proving that anything is better than nothing.
royal purple first Mobil 1 second
i always run the mobil extened use filters
My oil is made from rocking horse droppings...
nope...
I use Regular oil and change it at 5k intervals. My commute just shortened a whole bit, so I think I'm going to go ever 3k. Short commutes are brutal on cars.
