Not the modern MT900, winning races across the globe. I mean the early Dodge 2.2 powered Mosler Consulier. They are approaching 20 years old now, and someone has to have one with a blown motor in a barn somewhere right? Imagine the Challenge potential of empty tub and a V8? Or tweaking that Turbo II to its full potential? I think only like 100 were made, so good luck finding one, but I can dream right?

I remember reading about those when they were new. Amazing performance for the day coupled with those ugly duckling looks.

I don't think I have ever seen one in person.

Why are these called signatures when they are not in cursive?

During my early days at the mag I used one of those as a daily driver for nearly a year. I was also involved at one point in a Consulier on Consulier collision—possibly the only one to ever occur. I was also lucky enough to take a Raptor (the V8-powered, split-windshield model) to my 10th high school reunion.

They were awesome cars. Way ahead of their time. Sure you can say that they aren't that great looking, but nearly every modern Daytona Prototype looks remarkably similar.

I bought a raffle ticket for one of those many years ago. Still haven't heard whether or not I won.

You're going to have to elaborate on that collision story.

I drove a couple of them back in the day, once when we ran the test at Payne Engineering in Palm Bay and once when we were at some sort of concrete plant in Palm Coast. Early 90's, I think? Everybody was calling them "the kit car".

Everybody was calling them "the kit car".

A couple weeks ago my wife and I went to the beach, and that old concrete plant is basically right between our house and the beach. I was going to show her where we used to test, although I figured that progress had changed the look of things since the early '90s when we used that area. That was an understatement. Not only was the concrete plant—which had sat in a completely undeveloped area—gone, but it was GONE. Buried under a complete subdivision. I'm surprised I managed to even find the old location.

Okay, the crash story... In the final year of the CMC new car shootout... Wait, this probably needs an aside for the noobs.

Okay, we used to have a sanctioning body called CMC. One of the feature attractions was the "New Car Shootout" where we'd drag a bunch of identically prepared cars around to our events and folks could autocross them for valuable prizes. We used VW Corrados for a couple years, then when that deal ended we used Consuliers.

So anyway, in the final year of the program, we were doing mostly street events. We'd close down a section of streets in the downtown area of a smallish/resortish type town and set up a street autocross. They were awesome, and most were a centerpiece of a larger citywide festival or county fair or harvest festival where dead-eyed children would kill the weakest among them and drink their blood. It was a long time ago, so my memories are a little fuzzy on some of the details, though.

One of my favorite events was Montrose, Colorado. We used an obscene amount of downtown street area, as well as going through a residential area where people would sit in their front yards and barbecue while cars whizzed by.

Now, being an official, I always managed to sneak in some extra track time by warming up cars or taking VIPs for shotgun runs or some such excuse. At this particular Montrose event, we also had Rennie Bryant helping out, so when it came time to warm up some cars, I had an assistant.

One part of our downtown course looped over itself for a short distance—basically a quick diversion into a wide cul-de-sac. The corner leading onto this section was pretty blind, blocked by a beautiful old brick building. This fact was driven home as I saw Rennie emerge form behind the blind corner in another Consulier, from the cockpit of the Consulier I was driving.

At that point, there was really no avoiding a collision. I jumped on the brakes, but probably got no more than 15-20 feet of braking done before the hit. I still remember clearly looking right into Rennie's eyes as we came together. The look on each of our faces was one of only mild surprise as it all happened quite fast. I'm sure we each had a slightly puzzled visage that just said "Hey, what's Rennie/J.G. doing there?"

I hit him absolutely broadside, my front bumper flatly contacting the area just under the passenger side door at a pretty solid second gear clip. There was a sound much like two Rubbermaid garbage cans being slammed together, only louder. There was also a distinct "oooooh" to be heard, even inside the car, from the considerable crowd around the course.

The impact was pretty harsh, I snapped forward against the belt, and I saw Rennie's head jerk sideways pretty ferociously. We were both no more than rattled, however, and after a couple brief head shakes we hopped out of the cars to survey the damage and pretend we knew what we were doing.

Except, there was no damage. The cars had very literally bounced off of each other, and except for a couple of paint chips on the front bumper of the one I was driving, there was simply no evidence of any impact. We both did our best "It's all part of the show, folks" routine, got in the cars and drove back to the staging area.

That occurrence erased any thought I had of the technology level of those cars being all hype.

So if you ever see Rennie, let him know that you know his dirty little secret of being probably the only other person ever to be involved in a multiple-Consulier impact.

P.S. I also did something else in a Consulier that probably (make that "hopefully") no one has ever done. That story dies with me, however.

What was the story about the guy running from the cops? I think he headed north from the mainland side of the Ormond Beach bridge and would have got away, except the street he was on came to a "T" and he went straight off

I drove one of those cars from Ormond to Ft. Lauderdale, but the clutch was slipping so bad it wasn't any fun.

IIRC, one was used as a Moroso Pace car some 12-15 years ago. It was light metallic green.I was taken for a ride around the track in it ('96-'97?).I always thought that they were pretty cool cars...despite the looks.

Oddly enough, company owner Warren Mosler started buying the old cars back from people. I think he still has most of them.

I probably have driven one more miles than anyone. Catch me at one of our events and get a few beers in me and I will tell you the story about taking a Mosler to a high school football game in rural Kansas one time.

I saw one parked at the Denver Grand Prix back when they had them downtown. There was a typewritten sign taped to the window stating that the owner of the car was from out of town, was in the racing business and would like an attractive female from the area to show him around the Rocky Mountains and included a phone number.

Anybody here know who that might have been?
