So here's my dilemma. I have a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata with 71,000 miles in very nice condition. My dealership just traded a 2005 Rx8 with 30,000 miles and the Grand touring package (leather, heated seats, nav, moonroof, limited slip, six speed). The Rx8 is also in very nice condition. I can trade straight up for these cars. According to the books the rex has more value. It's a year newer with 40,000 less miles with more features and a back seat but it's not a Miata. What does the panel think? Deal or no deal?

I would say no deal. The MSM seems to hold it's value better than the RX8s.
Plus, i'd rather have an MSM than an RX8.
Or... at least i think. Now i'm flip-flopping.

Deal breaker: do you want or need the room of a back seat?

The back seat would come in handy since #2 is just around the corner. Not a family hauler by any means but more room than I have right now.

I would keep the Miata, since my friend recently sold his '04 RX8 with a dead motor for $850 my opinion of them has decreased.

Yeah, you can get a good low mileage engine for less than $2K. Or better yet, pop in a V8.

I was thinking Ellis Juan. It would fix the only thing wrong with the RX8.

I kid. Kinda.

Yeah, the rotary is the best part of an RX8. The worst part too.

I would stick with the MSM......of course I'm biased since I have one and don't have an RX8.

Do what I did, pick up the 8 then get a $1000 miata :)
The 8 is a great car! 2005 should have all of the first year bugs worked out of it, too.

You will kick yourself when you want to take the kids for a drive and can't. It would be a no brainer for me.

Economically, very likely a bad move. Practically, probably a good move.
You will be down on power and mileage, but handling will be similar (or at least reminiscent).

Car seats do fit in an RX-8. They are fun to drive, too, but as we all know, the '8 is not a Miata. Take the '8 for a drive without a salesperson, then decide.

Some of those new kid seats are ginormous! We have one little guy and will have another soon enough. Ideally I'd like to get something like a CTS-V but it'll be a bit before those are in my price range.
Considering how cheap the RX-8s are I would look at one. I can only fit in the base model without a sunroof but I really liked the car when I drove it a few years ago.
As long as I regularly run it up over 8000rpm I could semi-forget about the gas mileage.

Plenty of miata to be had there! The NC Miata is basically a short wheelbase RX8.

I'm the finance manager at the dealership so no worry of a salesperson keeping me from fully testing the vehicle's capabilities.
