  Maybe you all remember this great picture from the past wherin I stupidly demonstrate how not to protect yourself while grinding.

  

  Well it finally caught up with me.
  At Capitol Offense we had to make some cage mods so I picked up my favorite weapon to hurt myself with, the angle grinder, and set to work.

  BUT, not before I grabbed Jeff's safety glasses off his head. I really tried to be safe this time.

  Alas, a little bugger snuck up in there anyway. Someone noted on saturday that my eye looked red...I noted that I drank a liter of rum the night before. The redness didnt go away and long story short I spent the morning in a chair with a doctor coming at my eye with a small drill while expecting me to sit still. Not one of my finer moments.

  Stopped on the way home and picked up a full face shield at the hardware store.

  Last night I did something stupid and ended up with a bunch of Evercoat's Slicksand in one of my eyes, plus the hardener and some acetone for good measure. It was fun flushing that out. Bad week for eyes I guess.

  We have a technician that found out how fast a couch spring moves in reference to his eyelid. He lost.

  I've had a doctor scrape a chunk of metal/rust out of my eyeball once. Same thing, didn't even notice until the next day. he used a "brush" to get it out. unfortunately what they call a "brush" is a metal spike they use to dig in there. Probably one my more horrible experiences, after passing a kidney stone of course.

  Years later I'm back to barely using safety glasses while under the cars.

  Dremel tool 20,000 rpm - carborundum bit - comprehensive delamination of bit. Ouch.

  At least the doc had a vise to clamp my head in while he went in my eyeball with the drill bit. He said I was gonna get a light show, and he was right! Reminded me of the sequence in 2001 a Space Odyssey. Very strange.

  Sorry to hear of your injury.. hope you at least got the light show that comes with it.

  I've got a face shield and I've stopped using it because I was still getting bits in the face. None got to my eyes, but I didn't like it. Now, I use a pair of chemical googles with clear duct tape over the ventilation holes so my eyes are completely sealed from the grinding dust.

  I've been using an old welding helmet with the tinted glass taken out so just the clear panel is in it. It works pretty well, as long as you make sure it comes down around your chin far enough. I also wear clear safety glasses underneath as i'm not sure the clear panel in the welding helmet is impact rated.

  Be careful with how long you wear that. The cells in your eyeball, at least the front, get oxygen through the air. There's very little blood flow to the front of the eyeball. You can do some serious damage to the eyeball cells if you oxygen starve them long enough.

  I don't know how long too long is, but I suspect you can find some information on this at diving stores and such.

  One thing I thought of...I pretty much keep my eyes closed for hours at a time while I sleep...

  Do they get oxygen then somehow?

  But yeah...Glad you're OK and hope the lesson sticks (not that I'm one to preach).

  My eye doc didn't have the head clamp. Pretty sure I left permanent grip marks in his chair. That was tense watching a needle coming at you. The scraping or whatever did make a show though.

  Glad you're okay - I usually wear chemical goggles over my glasses, but even then, stuff can get by. However, it usually has to bounce around, cool off, and slow down a bit before it can get to my eye. Makes it more likely you can get it out without help from a doctor.

  My only grinder accident was with a bench grinder. Grinding down a steel bar, and set my grease soaked flannel shirt on fire.

  Dunno. And I may be wrong on my understanding. Heck, I don't even remember where I got the initial warning some many years ago.
  

  Though isn't there something about solid contact lenses being bad for the cornia, and the soft ones are gas permiable, letting the front of the eye "breath"?
  

  In any case, I'm not trying to scream like chicken little, just a warning that there's something about it that I recall as being unsafe for the eyeballs at some point.

  FT, I've never, ever heard of any warning regarding the eye and a gas tight protective covering. Not to say there hasn't been a warning, it's just that I've never heard it and I would seriously question the source. Yeah, the gas permiable contacts are supposed to be better for the eye and all that, but it isn't like the eyeball breaths as much as the rest of the body does and given the amount of oxygen in the suggested eye protection area and the very minimally air tight seal (as in not at all), and the minimal oxygen requirements for the cornea, I'm going with "don't worry about it." Worry about Nitrous Oxide and Belgian Ho's. That will kill you. Ask Robin. Or not.

  I have a surplus Vietnam era gasmask that I wear when I’m grinding so I don’t have to breath in the dust and it keeps my eyes safe. I tend to be grinding bondo or rust and I just cant picture either being to good for my lungs or eyes.
