so my wife and I have started talking about my next project car and I think we have settled on a small, light weight, rwd coupe. So far we have agreed upon an mgb gt, or a Volvo 1800(P, S, E, whatever). I am looking for other suggestions in that spirit of vehicles. I'm not partial to European cars so long as it is reasonably (I know) easy to get a hold of in the Midwest.

I also like the 240z but my wife doesn't think it is "classic" looking enough. Boo...

I have to push one already on your list, the MGBGT.

My second car (in 1996) was a 69 MGBGT. It was a ragged out, rusty, old piece of E36 M3, but it was a ball. Mine had a hot cam and overdrive and was a really great car. If I lived in the southwest I would consider daily driving one. They are a true classic, but are simple, and have great parts and knowledge base available.

    Do it..

If you're not in a rush, you can still get a deal on an Elan +2.

well that didn't take long. I already had an FB and that's a big no go. I really do like the mgb gt. That 6 series is not classic enough, however, it made me remember the 3.0cs. Had not thought about an elan, great suggestion. Keep em coming! You guys are awesome.

I would be surprised if you couldnt find a running one for $1500. There was a pretty nice MGB gt with wire wheels in pick and pull the last time i was there, that kinda annoyed me.

I've seen them in Nevada for 2,000 in decent condition. Saw a (really) rough runner for 1,000.

They do come cheaper than that, though. GRM'er bravenrace (something like that) sold his recently. It seemed pretty sorted, and I think it was more like $7K.

That would be my pick. Way more interesting than an MG.

An RX3 is a very rare car, if anyone proves me otherwise, send me the link.

But an MGBGT, that is going to be a great car. Overshadowed by the classic MGA, but worlds better as far as drivability goes.

Screw the Alfetta; terrible rusters, underpowered, almost zero resale value and for only a few thousand more you can have the sweetest V6 ever made: The Fiat 124 is an excellent choice, but finding the AC version will be tough. Don't discount the BC; still a good looking car: Or, if looking cool is more important than going fast: You can never go wrong here either:

Lately I have become enamored with the LWB 912! It's 250 pounds lighter than a contemporary 911, mostly where it counts, and only down a few horses. That Super 90 engine is brutally awesome.

I also like to look at who is out their supplying parts for these cars. MG, Z, 2002, Triumph, Beetle (LOL); are all supplied in the aftermarket and make it easy to find parts.
