suggestions on a rallycross car, other than my obvious choices of "an old subaru" and "another old subaru." I don't know much about what cars have good suspension setups/travel for rallycross offhand, so that's what I"m most interested in.

this would be for a car NOT used for daily driving, but still street-legal (e.g. must pass safety inspection, emissions, etc)

the criteria here is - can be found in decent running condition for $2000 or so - is tough - broken parts are reasonably easy to replace/find replacement for. - is fun to drive - AWD is preferred (but that puts me mostly at "subaru"), but FWD or RWD are also fine. - is not terribly "ugly" since it has to be something my wife will let me park inthe driveway on occasion, lol. - something 1987 or older is a bonus (so can use vintage registry/tags), but not a requirement by any means. - would prefer something fuel injected, as I really hate working on carbs.

    GO!

    Miata!

Or for something 87 or older: VW Golf, GTI, Rabbit, or really anything you want.

Not a miata....I can't buy a miata and not make it a track car or autocross car. And I already have an autocross car and can't afford trackdays!

Look for older model e30's, a 318ti or an e21.

funny I was just looking at one of those on CL today. Though IDK that the low-range gear really would be of much use, lol.

Not really nimble or light, but definitely hilarious with 304 V8 powa!

Any awd audi is a good choice as well. Turbocharged early 90's late 80's anything sucks for rally-x due to lackadaisical off boost attitudes.

The awd doesn't help as much as you'd think at a rally-x, any fwd car with a real (read, clutch type) LSD will put up a fight against any awd car besides STi's/Evos.

Rallying; It's like skydiving, except you have to dodge trees on your way down!

the FB has crossed my mind before due to good suspension travel. Downside is I know jack about rotary (and am scared of them!) and would hate to tear up a vintage sportscar. Also would prefer something with a bit more room to haul wheels/tires/cooler/tools/etc.

liking the e30 idea. The idea of beating up a BMW appeals to me, lol.

I know it's a waste of time, but

Several people on here saw it run in the MLRC series. They'll tell you how competitive it was.

Can be had for probably $500 and is nearly indestructible unless rusty - and you'll have the only one there.

as you may recall, I was asking about Isuzu Stylus last week.....so that is not out of the realm of possibility to go with its relative.

Id suggest just about any small FWD or AWD car. I'm looking for a junker to run dirt tracks. If I didn't like my Zx2 so much, I'd think about running it. One of the options was an old Festiva. I'm even looking into trucks. Anyone in the midwest got anything (that runs) for less than $300? lol. I would love to get into some RallyXing. I love going fast, but going sideways a little adds something to it for me.

    I <3 getting dirty.

Stock or Prepared Front - Saturn SL2 or Dodge Neon

Stock or Prepared Rear - Toyota MR2

Stock or Prepared All - Any cheap Scoobaru.

A decent driver should be able to trophy nationally in any of these picks. That is what I love about Rallycross.

XBL GamerTag: bcbrownell Racing is the process of turning money into noise.

    That one's a 98 Suzuki Swift.

98+ came with the 1.3 16V. The earlier ones were available with the 3cyl (Metro - you DON'T want this) or 1.3 8V, which are actually pretty decent for what they are.
