I have a 91 MR2 for a toy car right now. Since my second daughter was born, it has been a barn ornament.

Iv'e been having evil thoughts about getting rid of the MR2 and replacing it with a sleeper wagon.

What do you guys think is the ultimate sleeper wagon/ sedan within $2k of the market value of the MR2?

    Requirements:

<=$4500 (or partial trade for the MR2) Can accept two child seats safely. Interesting enough to replace my 'fun' car (doesn't have to be fast, but can't be merely 'pedestrian.') Coupes with 'real' back seats aren't out of the question.

I've been thinking about turbo Volvos, BMWs, Subie wagons that can accept EJ20s, etc.

Sad to see the MR2 in hibernation due to the lack of seats.

    Turbo Volvo

    P71

scooby wagon or impreza (4 door)

If your going to be lugging kids on a regular basis I would defiantly go 4 door.

    http://www.emergencyremarketing.com/ P71 source that I am considering..

    A project Impala SS/Roadmaster LT1 wagon?

    Turbo Volvo/Saab Wagon/hatch?

    Subaru wagon/sedan/hatch?

    P71 with change left over?

    E30/E36?

My serious vote would be for some sort of awesome 50's/60's wagon slammed on modern wheels/tires with an engine swap. Think LS1/4L60 with 4-wheel discs and air ride in a Olds Vista Cruiser.

I would probably get a first generation Subaru Legacy Turbo wagon. You can find them in your price range all day long. The wagons were not available with a manual tranny but there are many out there that have been converted, the sedan did come with a manual though.

Toyota Cressida with a 5 speed and a turbo.

Well under $4k for a N/A automatic with plenty of money left over for Supra bolt on bits.

    Awesome sleeper.

I have driven a roadmonster, its like driving a recliner. comfortable, but not my idea of fun. lol It sounds to me like you are just looking for someone to tell you to get a turbo volvo, which isnt a bad idea at all :)

    Passat or Audi wagon

    Mk4 VW Golf

    Saab 9-3 or 9-5

    e34 BMW 525i

    Volvo wagon

Sadly there aren't many Japanes wagons or hatches other than the Subie. There was a Camry wagon but I wouldn't drive it.

There was a Mazda6 wagon years ago. I am not sure if they are in the price range listed, but maybe. I know we were looking at one in 04,so maybe they have depreciated a lot over the last 5-6 years. They were available with a manual transmission as well.

I think the 6 hatches were trending a little bit cheaper than the wagons, and (at least seemed) to be more common in a manual...

    Mk IV Golf or GTI.

Get the 1.8T and they can be fast in a small pratical "economy" package.

I am pretty sure they are in your price range these days.

I will second the 9-3 idea. Get the right one and you will have 205hp 209tq, mid to high 30s on the highway, don't have to use premium gas, safe and will get up and go if you want it to.

when the PGT's time comes, it will be replaced by a sedan or wagon with similar desires as the OP. i asked my good friend who's been a professional wrench since the late '70s, and he said for the sedan I should be looking at E36 or Volvo turbo, and for wagon i should be looking at E34/E39 or Volvo turbo. he said all of the above are quite robust, but i don't remember which one has cheaper parts. i think for the price i'm looking to pay, it'll be E36 sedan or turbo brick.

oh, also to the OP, coupes with "real" back seats will be out of the question after you've loaded the kids into their seats a few times. unless you decide to tough it out until the kids are able to buckle themselves in (about 4 years old). that's what i've done, since i only had to carry them both about 6 times per year.

I hate making compromises in my vehicles! A sporty car is never really a "sports car", and a sport wagon isn't a roomy family hauler. If you want performance and room for kids...keep the MR2 and use the $2k to buy a beater minivan! (or turbo Volvo or subie or P71). If you want the best of both worlds, have one of each!
