It's no E30 or Miata, but I spent last week in the new Mercedes SL 63 AMG. I have driven faster cars and I have driven nicer riding cars and I have driven better handling cars. That said, I have never driven a car that combined all three so well. 512 hp is enough to get the job done nicely.

Still feeling a bit tingly about this one. Does anyone have $147,000 they can lend me?

You have to drive the Black Series then. You can borrow mine, as soon as I hit the lottery, rob a bank, or become really really ridiculously good looking.

Tim, so now that you're getting to drive cars us mere mortals can only hope to one day when we're old and grey and unable to depress a clutch, how's about a C6 ZR1?

I have never really considered AMG products "Grassroots".

is that really a whole Mustang GT better than the CL 550?

Older AMG products can be had for what might be deemed as "Grassroots Worthy" prices.

I was a lot more impressed with the AMG C-class at the Mitty than the SL. The AMG reps told me the C class had 600 lbs less to haul around, and it definitely felt that way. After driving the two of them, it left me wondering what the purpose of the SL was other than that you could put the top down - the C class just felt a lot sportier even though it was a four door sedan.

Around the SF bay area the new mercedes especially the s550 are very popular, even more so than comparable bmw and audi. The real issue is new mercedes are way too expensive, around here it is mostly foreigners with money driving em.

A premerger (before 1991) AMG not ///AMG are cool, but without documentation and paperwork it is very difficult to establish what exactly AMG did to a car they modified. It could just be a styling package, engine package, or suspension package and without paperwork it is difficult to know if a purported AMG is authentic. AMG is of no help so you'd be on your own to prove you have a real AMG and not a knockoff. I'd love to find an AMG gleason diff for my 280.

I understand it's nice. But, for $147 large, it BETTER be nice. Tell us, is it nice compared to other cars in that price range? Have fun driving its' competitors. ;-)

I once found one of those in a junkyard with a BMW turbodiesel under the hood. Later found out it was a factory option.

With the right parts (and I wish I knew what those were), the LS handles REALLY well. They did one for the One Lap, but did a bad job putting a 4.6 4V into it- fast, for a short while until it overheated.

AWD would screw it up- think more M5 kind of mods. I wish I also knew a 5 or 6 speed that bolted up behind that V8...... SO much potential, just left in the starting blocks.... (one of my sad cars that started and ended production while I've been working)

The LS was available with a manual in the 6 cylinder variety, right? How does said 6 cylinder respond to boost?

    Yes.

And according to some South African company, they boost quite nicely, thank you very much. Now if I could only remember the name of that company- it was a mid engined car....
