just took the bosses M23 up to the road racing center in Watkins Glen for display this weekend. Sat down in his office today and told him how much they appreciated him loaning them the car and would like to meet him at their meeting this weekend in Florida.

And he says..oh yeah I'm flying down to Daytona Friday. And I say..oh for the Rolex 24 race? He say's...no I can't make it I have too many other meetings scheduled for work, why? do you want to go? And I say..who wouldn't want to? He says ..I can get you 2 VIP tickets if you want them, they keep calling me and bugging me to go. Me..are you kidding? Him..I could have them here tomorrow if you let me know today...

And here's the part where lack of plane, hotel, rent a car funds steps in.

Oh man, that sucks. Its like have $400 that you can't spend on anything you want. "This $400 is to only be spent on tampons." What good is that?

If it was me I would break out the CC for something like that. Like you said - once in a lifetime.

As a DIYer, my view is fear nothing and try anything.

Daytona was like the Holy Grail to me. Walking into the pits, so much history, almost a religious experience. Working the races, with so many real heavyweights around, fantastic. Met some real interesting characters, like Bobby Allison, and a few jerks, too. Overall, my favorite racing experiences.

I've approached the wife with the idea of a romantic weekend getaway to sunny Florida, I'll have to see if she wouldn't mind "borrowing" a little of her "secret" stash of house emergency funds...

I felt that way the first time I drove over the bridge at Sebring....and that was not for a race.

    agreed with this.

Where are you at? If he's your boss... tell him you'd need a day or two off for travel time and roll out.

I can make it from Michigan to anywhere in Florida in less than a day technically. Long haul by yourself but would be fun if you have no reason not to go.

    Take a tent.

    Do I have this right?

Rent car. Fly it to Daytona. Sleep in car when the need arises.

Jump a cheap flight on Southwest, make up a sign that says "Daytona" on it, hitchhike there, buy a tent at the Daytona Wal-Mart, hawk it to somebody on your last day there.

VIP tickets dood. Tell the wife you will not go to any autocrosses, concerts, whatever, until the stash is payed off.

I would actually consider this damn close to an emergency.

Anytime somebody tells you that vodka mixes well with anything, slide them a jar of mayonnaise and tell them to practice what they preach.

^^^^^ What he said. You know this is a 24 hour cace rite? Why do you need a place to sleep? The airport is next to the track. Walk to the track from the airport ad back when it is time to go home. Dont eat for 24 hours. This is a once in a lifetime chance!!!!!

    Respectfully, Dean

kinda reminds me of the time i could have gone to Daytona for the 500 weekend back in '04.. my cousin got 10 tickets from a guy that he did a bunch of concrete work for that were about 10 rows up right at the start/finish line for all 3 races- Truck, Nationwide, Cup, plus infield passes for all qualifying and practice sessions starting on thursday or something like that.. the tickets were free, but i'd have to chip in gas money for the road trip in a pair of Suburbans from MN, a couple hundred $$ for my share of the hotel while there (everyone was going to be laid out in sleeping bags or whatever in one room..), and whatever food and souvenirs i wanted.. $500 was right about what everyone's share was.. i was only given like 3 day's notice before they left and had just made my $975 mortgage payment online and only had like $50 to my name for the next week.. the damn house payment could have been missed for a month and the penalties and what not would have been totally worth it..

There are times to foolishly spend money you don't have, and I think this might be one of them.
