Peep the latest project car update to ride along with Per at the 2010 Solo National Championships.

    project car update page.

The LeGrand looks eyelid-peeling fast on the Lincoln concrete.

This one is in HD, and I'm really surprised at how the extra bit of resolution makes the whole thing seem even faster. Comparing this video with the last update from our local site here in Florida was like watching totally different cars.

Pft, the LeGrand would sound sooo much better with a boxer motor in it!

I love to autocross, and I enjoy seeing the videos. However, it's a bit like golf, more fun to play than see on TV. This video is the first autocross video (that I've seen) that really seemed to convey the sensation of speed.

    Good job with the car.

    Love the ending.

The car looks wickedly fast. And it's something an average joe could build/buy. Has to be some points for that.

I work on a golf course. I play at least 27 holes a week. It is not fun to play.

there’s a lot of debate on this subject—about what kind of car handles best. Some say a front-engined car; some say a rear-engined car. I say a rented car.

    In reply to mtn:

The problem is you probably keep score. Stop caring about how well you play and it becomes a lot more fun. Seriously. Also it helps to play with people that are much worse than you. I've played for about 25 years, and I know I enjoy it least when I care about the score.

I think the painted lines on the course help you put a frame of reference to the speed involved - I agree, that clip was much faster looking than most on the web.

Thanks, the really funny thing is that it's actually faster when you're not viewing it through a wide angle lens. The top speed in the video is around 78mph. There's several spots where I'm hitting 73 (top of second).

You can see the overall results here: http://www.scca.org. As a reference, that's about 11 seconds faster than I would have been in a MINI.

Awesome video, but man that steering wheel is small.

Seems like you had to be too busy with your hands just to keep a hold of it.

What, not tennis shoe and energy drink sponsor?
Very cool, what I find funny about this video and similar autocross video is the course. On video the cones always look so minimal and hard to tell where to go. I have done enough autox to know this is not the case but with no peripheral vision and no ablility to look far down the course, the track is hard to follow.

    Interesting answer.

They're pals of JG; they're all (well, not Scott.) in an improvisational comedy gang together. I hear the jumping in ceremony is brutal. The lovely young lady is also the director of films, a standup comedienne, and part time Classic Motorsports spokesmodel.

A talented and hilarious bunch, to be sure.

Yes, those are my talented friends. Actually all of the commercials were shot on a single day of desperation about a week before the digital edition of the mag went to press last year. We had all these videos we had done, and wanted to put some little bumpers on them in hopes we'd actually remind people we sold things, so I called up my comedy friends and told them to come to my house with a few changes of clothing (which is actually not weird in the improv world). Then I called Scott and told him to come over. When everyone got there I had about three rough ideas written down on Post-Its and less than four hours of shooting, improvising and brainstorming later we had about six complete commercials shot. It was a fun afternoon.

And the Per video is awesome. I love that HD is so accessible for such a low price now. I think people underestimate the effect that the additional clarity has on how you view a video. It takes on a whole new level of meaning when you can see every weed poking through the concrete.

Man, that thing is fast! Toyman keeps pestering me about building a bike powered A Mod. That just might have to move up the project leaderboard.

Hey, Per: how much trouble would it be to build an air shifter for that beast?

Due to the JG explaination I was compelled to watch it again but this time in full screen mode. You are right, the picture is very clear and it is amazing how much is in focus. I can read on the side of the car the words TireRack and even see that the time slip was 53.867. All this on a crappy work dell laptop.
