  NEWS FLASH, NEW INFO.

  I've narrowed it down to these, Porsche 968 or 1983-89 911 (not the 964) and the BMW e46 M3 or an M5. Max I can spend is $15K. I've decided I want the social and driving benefit of the clubs. What do you think?

  However, I've decided to focus on the positive. I can buy what I want

  Ground rules. Needs to haul 4 people (see RX8 thread), under 10K (around 5k would be better, I have many plans), prefer rwd, must be manual trans, can work as a daily driver without constant tinkering (no Italians, unless they are female), and attracts the ladies (this is a joke, I don't plan on ever having sex again).

  What I've thought of:

  ur Quattro (I'd spend a little over 10K for one of those, wanted one since I saw Buffum's at POR in '82) RX8 BMW 5 series

  What do you all think. Oh, and if you know of anyone hiring chemists in the SE, drop me a line.

  WRX is a good choice, wonder why I never think of those? That fancy Ford looks nice. What do you know about them? BMW, it's such the choice and yet it doesn't get my blood going. I"ve never driven one, maybe I need to. Woody, the 911 thing has been running through my head. Do kids fit in those seats (10 and 8 now, standard size )

  I don't have kids that size, but I don't think that they'd be very happy back there.

  The back seat of the WRX isn't the greatest place, either. I'm actually thinking about trying to swap it for a used Legacy GT.

  Yes, you need to. Most of the appeal for BMWs for me is how they drive - the specs and looks aren't particularly what does it for me.

  2005+ Legacy GT is a good option. Lexus IS300 should be getting into the sub $10k price range too.

  BMW E39 540i/6 would be ideal if you get to haul the kids around on a regular basis. E46 rear seats are just too small, my kids hated being back there when I had mine, and they were 8 and 10 when I sold it.

  What's the story with the S4? Gem or junk? I friend in CO has a Passat and has wanted the S4 for some time now. Of course she's driving a Passat!

  Legacy GT wagon or sedan probably makes the good sense.

  I don't know which versions of the ur quattro were available in the US but I distinctly remember that there's a bit of an issue with parts supply for the earliest type engine. IIRC supply for the later engines (especially the 20V) is much better...

  I wouldn't call them massively practical either, but do you need that?

  Sanity is vastly overrated.

  Why do Italian cars have such a poor reputation?

  Granted, I've only had two (and a half if you count the Yugo) and they have been reliable.

  The Alfa Milano is a great car.

  I have two boys, 10 and 7... and they fit comfortably in the back of a '90 911 C2 along with football pads, helmets and drink bottles.

  Without the gear - they fit even better.

  I've been looking for ur's this afternoon. That BAT find for 2500 in CA would have been sweet. Swap in a 20v turbo and be done.

  Define "single". It was a hard lesson for me to learn that divorced with a kid is a lot different than being divorced without one..
