    Hey guys,

Just got this off of the trailer from CA on Monday. Not your typical car I know.

    http://web.me.com/cdirado/Diradosite/83-Sapporo-Tech.html

It was purchased from the seller at a salvage yard which is evident by the markings on the rear fender. The body is in remarkable condition considering where it was purchased from. The paint is tired, and there are a few bruises, but nothing major. The seller lowered it some, and added the tires and rims. I am not sure I want to keep them, but the work for now. Yes it is an automatic, but that may be remedied soon.

The coolest part of the car is the semi digital dash, and talking alerts for leaving the lights on,and such. The computer woman could be annoying to some, and maybe even me in the near future but my kids got a kick out of it.

There is a few issues I have found though and the seller didn't experience them,so I am a bit stumped. When driving it the second time today, and every time since the brake warning light on the dash sort semi glows, and then goes dark the whole time it is running. I also noticed the battery light is semi lit as well. The brake reservoir was s bit low,and I filled it,but the light is still doing the same thing. The brakes feel rock solid by the way. Also it has a bit of a stumble off idle wen first starting out that seems to get better/go away the longer it is running.

I didn't really get a chance to mess with it too much tonight as I played hockey, but I want to track down the issues. Any ideas as to where to start?

Tell me what you guys think of the car.

    Chris

That thing is awesome! Have you thought about a 4G61T (?) from a Starion? That way you could get rid of the autotragic as well.

You have a dash ground or engine ground that is bad. Run a temporary wire between the block and battery and the cowl and battery.

I have the feeling our government is banking on the popularity of American Cheese.

Also I forgot to mention the digital speedo doesn't work. It did a few times intermittently over the past year or so for the seller, but not now. The odometer does still work though. Any clues?

Nothing useful to add but wow, that's the tallest, most spindly auto shifter I've ever seen!

The seller included a Sapporo beer tap handle that he had planned to convert into the shift handle. If I can engineer some way to do it I will follow through with his plans. It is a very tall, and spindly shift lever, and the knob was pulling off until I tightened the set screw this evening.

That's really cool. I thought that they had disappeared forever. That's RWD isn't it?

I lift things up and put them down.

These have always been one of my favorite unicorns. I have not seen a real example in person for years.

There is another one in pick and pull by my house actually. I have seen quite a few there, no one bothers to keep that era of cars on the road here because of the emissions laws. I think they are nice cars though, its too bad they are mostly gone.

    Thanks guys,

It truly is a unicorn. The driver of the car carrier told me had never seen one before, and that whenever he stopped he had people asking about the car. Probably wondering why someone would buy it,and get it shipped from CA to MA.

While the Technica model has it's points (like that very interesting seat upholstery design, and the bumpers are better integrated) I prefer the older style Sapporo/Challenger due to it's two-tone exterior. I have memories of a sort of candy apple red Sapporo with a white roof, or a medium mettalic blue with white roof.

But hey, the Technicas have the better/more powerful engines....I think. It seems like the earlier models were all 1600 cc powered.

Man, I don't know how you guys find yard cars that old. Anywhere east of the Mississippi, if it is more than 10-15 years old, it's 8 inches high. They just don't keep anything around here.

Atlanta is east of the Miss, and I still find them, here I fixed your quote:

Where did you find one with an interior that's survived like that? Nice find there!

The stumble may be a carb issue. If it's not a feedback carb, I'd recommend rebuilding it yourself - I definitely would not recommend a parts store carb as my experience has been they tend to be nothing but trouble. Or you could fix the stumble with a 4G63T swap.

The parking brake light could be tripped by the e-brake switch, a switch on the reservoir, or possibly a switch on the proportioning valve. Or maybe a short in the wiring. I'd try disconnecting the switches one at a time and see which one turns the light off.

Wow- what in the world is that? I've never heard of that car.

Is it a derivative of an earlier Mitsu/Plymouth?

Have fun with that car! Wild find.

It's sort of a proto-Starion. Very similar platform and suspension, and some variants used a NA version of the 2.6 Starion (4G54) motor.

Older brother had one of those as one of his earliest cars. I think it replaced the 63 Dodge Coronet 440 (318 2bbl, 440 = body style) that our grandparents sold him for a buck.

He was t-boned in it and caved in the driver's rear quarter. He was fine and it drive just fine after that. He did comment that the lack of money for decent tires made it pretty scary to drive in the wet.

Oddly I do remember that the shifter in that car was extremely long. My Mom's FWD dual-stick Colt was the same way, must have been a Mitsu thing.

He eventually replaced the Sapporo with a 77 Civic (Red with white vinyl roof, yes it was the sushi-pimp ride)

First the Arrow as the "technical" and leading Mitsu/Pyl/Dodge.

Then the Sapporo/Challanger twins then the Starquests.
