  I am still on - but I haven't logged in since after the first season this year. There is real racing to be done while the sun shines... but when the season winds down in Oct I'll be back on there in a Skippy, SRF, Riley or FRS500 again.

  I know a few folks deeply involved in iRacing and keep thinking I should get at it.

  Then I think "I could buy some brake pads and tires with that money" and the urge gets beat back down.

  Yea... if my car wasn't in pieces, I would probably think the same thing.

  I am not in deeply - I run two races a week and a little practice/qual for something to do to unwind when there isn't any actual work going on in my garage (or I'm too sick and tired of the real limitations of my racing "career").

  It is one of the few places where drinking and driving is actually stress free.

  I was pretty active but I just got tired of waiting to race at a certain time, or paying for a new track or car, or etc. I love the game but without a job I just can't afford it at all and I see $30 for 3 months plus a new track and a new car as couple autoxes or a single pdx, which are way better.

  I loved it when I was on and would still be loving it if I could afford a computer that will run it. 13 fps is a nogo.

  If I could race it when I wanted, by myself, and on my local computer then it would be fun. I could practice and become good, but the way they have it set up now I just can't justify it.

  Actually I wish they would just go ahead and make it compatible with the ps3. Thats what I'm on 90% of the time anyway.

  This is what I do. I just use the Testing mode. The only thing the internet is needed for is the license check. I use iRacing for learning the tracks, but don't do any racing. I use a laptop so the screen size sucks, but its got a really good video card.

  Truth is, I really like the idea of iRacing, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired.
  

  Honestly in a side-by-side test GT5 is a better driving simulator. I ran the MX5 on Laguna Seca in both, lap times where pretty close in both but the feel was dramatically better in GT5.

  GT5 lacks a structured community, but there are more racers in total, and we host a weekly league for GRMers here:

  Yes for tracks. Monthly fee is part of the package though :( They have a lot of specials and SCCA members can get a discount if you've never used iRacing before. Get a trial. It does take a while to get used to, but once you acclimate (it is not an xbox or PS3 game, it is a very good simulation) it is very realistic. Throttle lift oversteer, steering feedback is very good when using a logitech g25 or 27, rear tire lockup when no rev-matching, etc.
  

  I will admit I do not have any experience with GT5 or other racing games. I also do not use it for racing yet (until i can get some extra screens). However, I work for a simulation company that makes engineering level vehicle simulation software and hexapod driving simulators.
  

  The iRacing tracks helped me learn almost all the tracks I raced with during Skip Barber. It lessened the learning curve a ton! Now that they have the MX-5, I drove some of the tracks I ran in 2009. Shift points are identical, lap times are within 10ths of a second.

  I think that's why I'm hesitant on getting into iRacing. I don't mind buying the content. But to pay a fee just to use it for non-w2w activity doesn't work for me.

  I tried the sim they had set up in the Mazda booth at Petit and enjoyed it a fair amount.

  I'm an average guy that will be doing time trials and HPDEs for the rest of my life, w2w for this cat is WAAAAAAAAAY at the bottom of the list. I think I'll stick to the SimBin type sim racers where I can hoon around in practice/test mode for free.

  No, that's why I didn't comment on them except for what I have seen and heard form others about them being games. I also am not going to buy an xbox or ps3 anytime soon either. I'm not into gaming, so iRacing was a good fit for me.

  rFactor and GTR are for the PC. They can be picked up pretty cheap. I got rFactor, GTR, GTR2 and GTL for $20 off of eBay and the fixed GTL download for Windows 7 for free.
