Lots of love for the P71 Crown Vics and 9C1 Caprices here. With good reason of course. I was actually eyeing a 9C1 wagon as my next dog hauler/tow vehicle when I managed to come across this today for an almost challenge price, couldnt pass it up.

    Z56 Police package Tahoe.

Something this big has no right to handle as well as it does.

    Badass!

What sort of engine would that have, then?

With a Bocephus sticker on his 442, he'd light 'em up just for fun

5.7 V8, engine isnt any different, but the suspension, brakes, frame are upgraded and it has heavy duty coolers for the oil, trans and PS and dual batteries and a 140 amp alternator.

Sold the Oldsmobile Tuesday and started huntin dog haulers. I had already had my eye on a police package caprice wagon and when I went to do the search for it again on CL I stumbled on this one. A good price for what it was since these still draw 5-6 k but I talked him down to an even better price. Overall good shape, body is a bit dinged but a repaint is in the future anyway.

BTW the place with the 9C1 Wagon has one of these for sale too for $3500

I've heard several officers say that the Tahoe's are quicker through the corners than the Crown Vic's at the various training events they've gone to. I was surprised and skeptical the first time I've heard it, but I've seen it said on several different forums now.

IIRC, in 2WD these are the only high speed persuit rated SUVs out there. Killer find

Indeed this is the 2wd pursuit edition, Ive owned a suburban of the same vintage and drivetrain and while this is admittedly lighter its alot faster than the suburban was, more than the weight difference would account for. Of course.....a few tweaks and it could be faster ;)

Im sorely tempted to drag it to a local autocross just to see how good it really is.

Nice! Those make sweet haulers/tow vehicles and yes, they really do handle. Unfortunately up here all we have are 4x4's

I've seen them do some manuevers on the highway. They certainly don't pitch and wallow as they snap over between lanes and such.

Throw some Impala SS wheels on it and roll....

Nice! Makes sense to me. I remember when they first came out. The 9C1 Caprice was quicker than the P71 Crown Vic, but since Chevy dropped the Caprice they didn't want to lose that advantage over Ford. So they made this Tahoe to try and replace the 9C1 as best they could. It was even designed to use the same wheels so departments that already had stockpiles for their Caprice fleets wouldn't have to change.

I have an all new appreciation for police packages in general after doing a ridealong in a Crown Vic a few weeks back (in the front seat, not cuffed in the back ). It handles nothing like my dad's old Grand Marquis - more like a poor man's BMW 540i.

Nope, they are complete bricks. I think I'll ditch it and see if Dan can get me one of those Jag 6cyls from his buddy to swap in there ;)

    LSx swap!?! or big block?

Inanimate objects are classified scientifically into three major categories - those that don't work, those that break down and those that get lost.

There's one of these (2wd cop SUV) I see pretty regularly on my way to work. I dig 'em, but I don't think I'd ever buy one. I much prefer 4x4 for my tow/utility rigs in this neck of the woods, since towing over the passes in the winter pretty much requires it and of course any mountain adventuring in the winter does as well...thus why you see so many 4x4 trucks here.

One thing is for sure...when it comes to trucks, it doesn't get much cheaper and easier to maintain than this 2wd, 5.7 powered cop mobile! The thing is rock solid in the first place, with all the right parts, and on the rare occassion that it does need work it would be a cheap and easy deal. Good find!

I'll let you know when I start driving it. PO says he was averaging 14 city.

This is purely for towing/dog transport not DD use so the fuel mileage was not an issue for me.

I'll have to pass on the trade but like I said there's a place local that has one for sale and they specialize in 9C1 Caprices and P71 Crown Vics so they would probably see a great deal of value in that trade if you wanted to come out to philly.

Thats the other one and the place I was talking about. I've never dealt with them, bought mine from a private seller, but they seem to have an interesting selection.
