  Long time listener, first time caller, or poster rather.

  I've got a bit of the fever to get myself into a another car. Saw a 2003 E39 M5 with 85k miles.
  

  It'll be assuming DD duties for me for now. Anything I should be looking for specifically to prevent post-purchase weeping? Not the cheapest of cars to maintain but not so bad from what I've read on here.

  The salesperson I spoke to did not inspire confidence when he said it was an automatic; he thinks automatic transmissions require manually changing the gears and manual transmissions change gears automatically. Hopefully they are also dim enough to not recognize what they have and drop the price a bit further.
  

  I'd appreciate any help in the matter

  they think a manual is an auto and an auto is a manual? Idk if I would personally want to buy anything off of them. Aren't all e39 m5's 6sp? otherwise, the only thing I know about are weak clutches

  The vehicle is a manual, all the M5s of this generation are. Salesperson deficiencies as a human being aside, it does scare me a bit why this car is at this particular dealership. The previous owner obviously didn't know what they had or had to get out from under it in a hurry or something.
