  Well, I saw both of them at the Detroit Auto Show this morning. Good looking in person. They're close enough to twins that my choice will be based on local pricing and colour choices. Each brand will have one colour that's theirs alone, Subaru's will be the WRC blue, the Scion folks didn't know. For me a base spec of either , in the light silver colour will do nicely. Now, I just have to wait a few years for some depreciation to kick in.

  On MotorWeek, they said that one of them (I think it was the Subie) will also have an "available" rear wing that sits a foot or so off the rear deck lid.

  It's too bad that they couldn't have had different engines (flat four in the Subaru and inline four in the Toyota) to distinguish them a bit more.

  ^Wait for the next-gen models. The idea was for both companies to start with one badge-engineered car, then for each version to evolve separately.

  Pricing hasn't been finalized, but both told me mid-twenties. The Subie had a low wing and it's optional, both will have a wing available, but base versions have none. I thought it looked good without one. I also think they might look good with some retro styled 16" wheels. I'll have to play with Tire Rack's site once they add one of these cars.

  I saw them there too and thought they looked much better in person. I was favorably impressed and give a slight edge to the Subaru version.......mostly because I like Subarus. I could see owning one one day.

  Definitely will own one.... the question is when and if it will be new. I just have no need for a dd and certinaly not one like this.

  "Need" ? What's "need" got to do with anything. If I made do with what I "need" we'd be down to one vehicle, my wife's Scion xB !

  I've made no secret that I'm very interested in the Scionbaru twins. Unlike some other cars [cough]CRZ[cough] the FR-S/BRZ does a good job of emulating the '80s/early '90s Japanese sports cars I grew up wanting and owning like the AE86 Corolla, 240SX, RX-7, and RWD Celica.

  Does any one think the two new front engine rear drive GM cars will be competition for these on track and in sales? I actually think the GMs look better.

  That 130R concept thing ? It's pretty homely, IMHO.

  The GM's are not actually being made, they were just concepts.

  I am definitely looking forward to test driving the Scion.

  Thats a shame. Slap a Vega or Monza name on it and I think it would sell.

  I really don't think either of those concepts would sell very well. The kids want practical and a baby Camaro isn't very practical. Nor a copy of the 1993 Mitsu Eclipse. Now if that Camaro looking one was reconfigured into a 5 door hatch... basically a clone of an e30 wagon, but with a decent 4 cylinder engine (and GM seems to have those around) and some different styling (meaning, not like a stupid Camaro) then they might have something.

  And nobody is sitting around saying "man, Vega, that was a great car". New name please.

  Who would want a Toyota inline 4? More like who would want an n/a Subaru motor, Toyota has made some of the greatest 4 cylinder motors ever made. I wonder if you could swap a 2zz or a beams 3sge into it... Now that would be fun. Ive heard rumor that some of the bigger d1gp team are looking at using 3sgte power.

  I'm biased as I'm coming at this from the motorcycle end of the equation, but I'd much much rather have a bent-4 than another stinky buzzy inliner. I believe the Subaru is a true boxer as well and should be a pretty smooth runner because of it.

  Vega was a small 4 banger front engine rear drive. It didn't sell that badly. Most of the "kids" I talk to bitch about how everything is a front drive 5 door. Funny how these cars get so much hype from the "kids" if what they want are 5 doors.

  The Vega also had a reputation for horrid build quality and engines that melted themselves into scrap at an alarming speed...my father had one...frequently cites it as the worst vehicle he has ever owned.

  I'm pretty sure that the cost of engineering involved in those two very, very different powerplants would have had a negative effect on the price. Sharing the development costs is a savvy move.

  I owned a '72 Vega and a '76 Pinto...both bought new. BOTH ran decently and were reliable for the short time I had them (2 years, 30,000-40,000 miles). That said, the Vega was NOT a GT and inside looked like a poorly scaled down Chevy Impala. The dash and the steering wheel looked like they took generic GM parts and cut them to fit into a smaller space. Outside? The car from the windshield forward looked like it was assembled by Helen Keller on a really bad day. Panel gaps so bad you could have lost a paperback book in them.

  The Pinto, on the other hand, was very well put together, just not the great driving machine it could have been with all those Euro pieces in it. An Audi Fox separated my time with these 2 cars and while THAT car was a ball to drive, it was about as reliable over the long haul as a $0.10 watch.

  If Toyota had decided to put an inline four in their version, I'd bet it wouldn't look as sleek because the hood might have to be higher than it currently is,although a Miata hood is low. The flat four is also pretty short, front to back, allowing the center of gravity to be further back.
