I've seen the Jalopnik articles, and it looks interesting, but what I'm not sure of is why they'd use an expensive BMW diesel when they could just use an LS1?

You can't buy new LS1 crate motors anymore, although you can get the LS3.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in an engine, but I think there are cases where a nice, modern, turbo-diesel inline 6 would be preferable to a nice, modern, all aluminum V8.
For a daily, I'd want the improved mileage of a diesel.
