There's a new project update on our Spitfire. We found big power gains after adding a European intake manifold and carburetors, but were surprised at what we learned about the euro air cleaner.

This is the same setup I am installing on my 80 Spit.

Can you tell me which needles you were using? And is it the needles you will be changing when you address the air cleaner?

We installed a dual HS2 set-up on our '79 and it definitely woke it up. I'm still not happy with the needles either, but it doesn't seem to be running overly rich or lean. There's just a mid-throttle hesitation that's a bit annoying.

Unfortunately, the HS4 needles for their '73 engine would be different than what we would need for our later smog-spec engines.

We're running K&N filters with billet aluminum mounting plates. They look really cool (the Triumph badge is engraved into the cover), but they just barely (not really) clear the inner fender on the bonnet. Installing lift struts seems to help a bit for opening the bonnet w/o scraping the fender against the filter studs.

Bill - I highly recommend the Bell 4-2-1 header and matching exhaust that Spit Bits sells.

I did this to my Son's 72 1296 Spit this summer. I used a USA spec dual manifold from a 69, dual HS2s. I used a 4 into 1 header I had in the shop. I tried a Tri Y header but with the lowered front spring I ran into clearance problems so I put on a 4->1 header that I had in the garage. It solved the clearance problem but I lost some low end power.

Messed with the carbs for a while and finally bought a needle set from Rimmer that they recommend for use with headers.

Everything has been improved, from power to drivability. I don't remember the needle number but I can find out if anyone is interested.

Unfortunately I already have the European setup with a stainless steel down pipe. That's not to say I won't sell it and buy the other. I shopped around and just could not bring myself to spend that much money at that time.
