I have the first bubbles and miscoloring through the paint on my 1972 Mercedes 280 SEL 4.5L This is not a concourse car, and repair cost/time are issues. That said what ways are there to forestall the progress of rust? Is there any way other than sanding down to bare metal and then getting the car repainted?

You could sand it down to bare metal, where it is rusty, treat the area with phosphoric acid and prime and paint the spot.

This is assuming that the rust is surface rust and not coming all the way through the metal from the other side.

Bubbles = rusting through from the backside. You've got to cut it out or the cancer will continue to spread. Probably an inch beyond what you can see in any direction.
