  I have an 80 Spitfire with dealer installed tape type pinstripes on it. The vinyl is cracking, the stripes are faded and I'd like to remove them but not the paint underneath.

  Any suggestions?

  I haven't tried it yet but I've read that a heat gun will soften the tape and adhesive for removal. Then one of those eraser type discs (Eastwood sells them) to clean-up the left over adhesive.

  Yeah, heat gun and a plastic scrapper works well. If careful can use some type of glue softner with the plastic scrapper. I've used a product called goof-off successfully without damaging paint. Body filler spatula's work well for this, they can contour to the body shape. Some advise razorblades but I usually damage the paint with them so I find other tools like the body filler spatula's or plastic ice scrapers instead.

  The best thing for this is one of those erasure wheels you can mount on a drill. They make quick and easy work of tape stripes with little or no damage to paint underneath.

  3M also sells a product that removes tape stripes, I don't know the name but you can get it at an auto body supply/auto paint shop.

  You do realize that after the tape is removed, the paint underneath will NOT quite match the rest of the car?
