I just got my hands on an old Triumph Spitfire Mk1 racecar. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this car. Before I starting redoing it, I wanted to see if it had any history that anyone knew of. A friend of mine got it from a junkyard 10-15 years ago in Huntsville.

Are you certain that it was raced, and not just a rollbar?

No fuel cell in the back so maybe a autox car.

    Nice rims mind you.

It has a spot where a fuel cell was mounted at one time as well as a large steel plate mounted on the passenger floor pan for ballast. Also the battery mount is right behind where the passenger seat would be and it has lots of little bumps that look like battle damage to me.

Have you might contacted the Vintage Triumph Register or local Triumph clubs for help with the history? Looks like a great project. http://www.vtr.org/

Go to the TAC forum and ask Mark Rothermel. He used to autocross one years ago that was sitting in the back of Paul Bylar's shop. It looks vaguely like that one, but I could be wrong. It does seem familiar.

I raced a Spitfire Mk.III in the early 70's. Back then Spits were very popular. I remember small bore grids at Waterford Hills and 1/3 of the field would be Spitfires. Its probably hard to trace the history on this car as there were so many of them being raced.

AndreGT6 - we didn't race with fuel cells back in those days.

This one doesn't have the fuel tank and didn't have one when my friend got it which it my mind says fuel cell.
