I was looking at the various auction catalogs for Monterey this week and am simply dumbstruck by the number of high dollar, truly important cars are on offer this year from the various auctions. There has never been a year where this many cars of this magnitude have been offered for sale.

Here is a list of just the potential million dollar or more cars on the block:

    Mercedes 540K Special Cabriolet - $1.1-1.3 mil.

This group is just mind boggling and a real treat for anyone going to Monterey. Just to have the opportunity to view this many significant cars in one place is unprecedented. Yes I know they are a zillion dollars but they are still stunning cars with so much rich history.

Can the current market withstand this much on sale at one time?

I'm not a part of the high dollar car market by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll give my (quite possibly incorrect) oppinion on the matter. It will be time to sell these cars for big bucks over the comming years. There will always be rich people that enjoy having exclusive rarities, but I think the buying base for cars from bygone eras will largely be replaced by younger generations with different interests. A smaller buying market, could mean lower relative prices, so now might be the best time to cash out if that is the owner's goal. Of course, flooding the market at any one time will usually not be good for sellers.

On the other hand, I'm a young guy and would probably buy a Cobra or old Ferrari from the list if I had millions to burn.

The D Type , Bugatti T51 and the 250 Testarossa are my kinds of cars and I am not old either. :)

Those would be my Lottery buys.

I'd take the Alfa 6C and 8C if I had the money, and it's not exactly like I've seen them around when they were new...

There will always be people who are interested in the rarer items from bygone ages; IMHO what's going to tank are the prices for bread-and-butter vehicles as and when the people who saw them around when they were in their teens and twenties die out. You know, the "I'll have one of them when I'm grown up" vehicles.

    Sanity is vastly overrated.

I think we are seeing that with the Healey 3000 already.

How about the Pontiac Banshee? That should be a million dollar car. I'd like to see the Plainsman bring that much (it would be fun to see a seven-figure station wagon), but it's more likely to bring about $200k.

The Pontiac Banshee went for 325K at Amelia Island this past March. It'll be lucky to reach 500k.
