In reply to OFracing: I say look at the second generation corvairs. 20K should get a really nice Corsa convert, or maybe a just about perfect monza. There are plenty to choose from, parts are readily available, and the cars are cheap. Like someone else said, if they were made in Europe, they would be much more expensive and sought after. They handle well, and with the 140 horsepower engine and a 4 speed, they will suprise a lot of classic car owners. Plus they came with seatbelts in the back seat....

The Lancia Zagato looks like a scaled-down Bristol 412. Very cool, though.

Also, I agree with Tim and others, a Triumph Stag sounds perfect.

I do not have any direct experience with the 4 seat but obviously driven the 2 seaters. The Morgan is a fun car with a decent back seat. As a bonus, the Morgans seem to never loss their value.

Make no mistake regardless of the year of the car its still a 1950s er,40s, er 30s design. You drive it with elbows out and a big smile.

Part supplies are great and support is wonderful. Its a very simple car. Not much you cant fix your self. You can even call the factory and get a real human, and if your lucky, talk to the guy that built your car.

They may look kit-ish, but so does a TD.

Here is a wild idea. How about a Ferrari Mondial convertible. The rear seats are absolutely usable and it is a Ferrari. They run around $24,000 and are a fun car. I owned a coupe for a few years as a daily driver and will be getting another in the next year, quite possibly a convertible. I kept up with the cars needs and never had any issues with it. They are more expensive to service but they are not depreciating at all and will likely still be worth what you paid for it in a few years and possibly a bit more. They also have a/c that works and other niceties like that. Finally they are Ferrari's.

Fox body Mustang is possible. My Spider has useable seats for children under 12 and I have seat belts installed. I used it as the soccer coach car and could transport 3 others for short distances. The boys loved the ride. I saw a 93 Cadillac Allante convertible recently auctioned at $7k with a few later Jags. I think you should take half your budget and go to an auction and use the other half for upkeep. $10k would have bought some very nice goods in today's market. Go with an open mind and see what turns up.

Ferrari Mondial??? Great idea... Spend $4- $5000.00 above your budget, and $3- $5000.00 per year to maintain it. What's that work out to be??? About $1- $2.00 per mile driven to maintain? The Triumph Stag, while a somewhat fragile car, will cost a fraction of that to purchase and keep on the road. And I can assure you... You'll see more Ferraris on the road than Stags. Cheers, Scott
